Chelsea can overtake Tottenham’s total league points next season

We’re all upset about this season coming to an end early, just as it was getting to the exciting bit.

There were finals to be played, crunch league matches to be won, trophies to be earned. But there was one prize we didn’t even know we were up for – beating Tottenham’s total points in the top flight of English football.

In Sky Sports’ boredom they’ve made a nice graphic illustrating every team’s total points since the foundation of the league in 1889.

You can see the fun clip here, but you’ll have to click through to the Tweet to see the actual video.

If you can’t see it, don’t worry, we’ll summarise. Chelsea stat low down, but have gradually been reeling in our old rivals, especially over the last few years.

At the very end we close in on Spurs, and we end last season just a few points short of their historic total. We are now on 5082, they are on 5091.

Tragically our chances of overturning them this season have seemingly been ended (although we may pick up where we left off, who knows). But if we continue our upwards trajectory, and they continue with Jose Mourinho in charge, we may well pass them sooner rather than later.

We won’t get a trophy for it, but it will feel great, that’s for sure.
