Arsenal told to compete with Chelsea for English midfielder

Chelsea have been linked to Declan Rice in recent days, and the Blues really sound like they have some interest in the their former academy prospect.

They won’t be the only top team interested in the emerging England international as he develops into a top Premier League player.

The Metro have quotes from an Arsenal legend saying that the Gunners should, in fact, be the ones chasing him.

“Chelsea have been linked with him, but I don’t know why Arsenal aren’t looking at Declan Rice,” Merson is quoted as saying.

“A player like Rice can allow the attacking players to flourish and it gives the central defenders the chance to be better than what they are,” he continued.

Both teams could actually use a player like that. Chelsea have a lot of interesting midfield options but maybe not the full time tackler that could help out a talented but sometimes fragile defence.

It won’t be cheap to prise West Ham’s youth product away from them though, especially if Arsenal are sniffing around him too.

But given some clubs are likely to be in a total financial state come the autumn, it might be a nice time to buy.
