Tammy Abraham still has to “convince Frank Lampard he can be leading man”

Tammy Abraham has been a key player for Chelsea this season, and his goalscoring form carried us through the early stages of it.

He’s fallen off since, and niggling injuries have prevented him from picking up any kind of form at all.

The Evening Standard have a piece today which is headlined “Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham still to convince Frank Lampard he can be leading man.”

It seems harsh – what more could a striker do in his debut season than what Tammy has done for us (forget Erling Haaland for a second)? But he’s not totally wrong. The striker’s recent drought is as much down to his injury as anything, but given he’s clearly still got that ankle issue, it may prove decisive when it comes to Frank picking the team tonight, with Olivier Giroud looking dangerous on Saturday.

In any case, it would be foolish to say that Tammy, for all his success this season, has convinced everyone that he is going to be our number 9 forever. We couldn’t have asked for better progress so far, but he’s got a lot more to develop in his game before there is no longer competition for that coveted spot.
