One theory why Chelsea assistant left to go to Turkey

Chelsea let a few players go in January, but there was also a coaching departure.

Eddie Newton had been on Frank Lampard’s staff all season, having previously been involved when we won the Champions League in 2012.

He left the club two weeks ago to join Trabzonspor in Turkey, a rather odd move that Liam Twomey had a theory about on the Athletic Chelsea podcast “Straight out of Cobham.”

Twomey speculated that part of the reason the Turkish side wanted Newton is because he’s an established Premier League face, and English to boot. He reckons it’s part of their strategy to try and attract more Premier League players to their team, to go with former Chelsea players Jon Obi Mikel and Daniel Sturridge.

There will be plenty of Blues fans keeping an eye out for their results now.

You can hear the full discussion in the podcast here, with this part coming after 25 minutes.
