How Chelsea plan to profit from Boga’s breakout year

The case of Jeremie Boga is a very interesting one.

Having played for years in Chelsea’s youth teams and had a couple of seasons out on loan, the club seemed to finally give up on him reaching his potential when they let him go to Sassuolo on a permanent deal last summer.

But they didn’t relinquish all of their rights – the club still have a buy-back clause that will allow them to redeem the winger for a set fee. That fee now looks rather small considering the season he’s having and the teams now circling around him trying to buy him.

Gianluca Di Marzio has now reported that Chelsea have met with the Serie A side to negotiate a price for that buyout – that is to say, rather than Chelsea trigger the clause and try to sell him on themselves, they will allow Sassuolo to just pay a set fee to cancel the clause.

We will likely find out fairly soon what the conclusions are.
