Why Chelsea could make unusual transfer move this summer

Emerson Palmieri has been linked with a return to Italy many times since arriving at Chelsea, and the latest wave of rumours hit today, with sites like SportWitness translating claims from Italy that Juve have made him a top target for this summer.

Marcos Alonso, our other option at left back, has also been repeatedly linked with moves away, and while it’s very unusual to see a club sell two senior players in one position in one summer, we reckon it’s on the cards this year.

Frank Lampard has tried them both out extensively and decided he doesn’t fancy them. He’s resorted to playing Cesar Azpilicueta at left back.

That’s not sustainable, and keeping either of them makes no sense if they’re not going to be used. So while it is unusual, we think it’s very possible the club let their two left backs go.

Of course they will have to be replaced, and we expect one of the major incoming players this summer to be a left full back. With Azpilicueta able to cover on both sides, it might be two out, one in, thanks to the emergence of Reece James as an option on the right.
