Why Chelsea should do everything in their power to secure Sancho deal before June

Yesterday’s article in the Evening Standard about Chelsea’s potential transfer targets had a number of interesting names mentioned, but one was head and shoulders above the others.

Jadon Sancho will be one of the biggest names on the market this summer, and he is also apparently on Chelsea’s list – James Olley writes that Chelsea “hold a serious interest in Jadon Sancho” who looks set to return to England this summer after a successful breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund.

If Chelsea are truly interested, they would be better off trying to tie up a deal in advance, as they did with his erstwhile teammate Christian Pulisic.

Why? Because it’s the European Championships this summer, and as it stands Sancho looks likely to be a starter (and potentially a star) for England.

Olley writes that Dortmund want “in excess” of £100m for Sancho, and even that will seem low should he make an impact this summer. Nothing boosts a player’s price and contract leverage quite like become a fully fledged star for the Three Lions, and the club may seriously regret not stumping up before the tournament starts to ensure the bidding war doesn’t get totally ridiculous.
