Chelsea broke “rule number one” in Champions League defeat says Wenger

Arsene Wenger has been working as a pundit on BeinSport for the recent Champions League games, and it’s fantastic to have his insight.

“The Professor” knows everything there is to know about the game at the top level, and he had some harsh analysis of how Chelsea got on against Bayern Munich last night. Given we were battered 3-0, it’s only fair.

The former Arsenal boss was very clear on what had gone wrong, and he thought that Chelsea had committed a cardinal sin in allowing their opposition to control the game.

“At that level, to give possession away you’re punished at some stage because they make you run too much, and you cannot survive for 90 minutes,” Wenger mused in quotes picked up by the Metro

“In the Champions League, if you lost the midfield you’re in trouble, it’s rule number one.”

It’s true that the pairing of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic always looked like it was going to be in trouble, and it played out exactly like that. Bayern put on a clinic and worked the space around them perfectly.

A harsh lesson to learn, but an important one too. We won’t be making the same mistakes again next year.
