April deadline set for Chelsea stadium work to begin

Chelsea have advanced in every way since Roman Abramovich arrived almost ten years ago, but one area they’re starting to fall behind their peers is in terms of their stadium.

Stamford Bridge was not the biggest to begin with, and as their rivals upgrade and expand their stadia, the Blues are stuck in limbo.

If you’re interested in the full story on what’s happening with the frozen redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, you can check out the Athletic’s extended piece here.

It’s packed with interesting nuggets, but one date in particular caught our eye. March 31st is the final day Chelsea’s planning permission, applied for in 2017, will be relevant.

If they haven’t begun work by then, it becomes void and they would have to go through the whole process again to get it back.

So it seems that the end of next month is a significant barrier – if, as we expect, there is no progress, we can consider all of the plans off.

However, that deadline might also prompt some last minute movement on the club’s part. Let’s see if we hear a peep in the next 2 months.
