Trabzonspor “have reached an agreement” with Chelsea’s Champions League winning assistant

Former player, fan favourite and youth assistant Eddie Newton has agreed a deal to join Turkish club Trabzonspor, leaving Stamford Bridge this month.

Jon Obi Mikel and Daniel Sturridge are already playing for the Anatolian side, which does explain the connection somewhat, but it’s still very much out of left field.

The news was originally reported by Hasan Tuncel in Turkey, with ChelseaLoanArmy on Twitter bringing us the translation. He says that the Turkish side have “reached an agreement on principles” with Newton.

It’s certainly a move out of the blue. We had no idea Eddie had ambitions of working abroad, and one would imagine him starting out in League One or League Two in England like most rookie coaches trying to move up the coaching ladder at a smaller club.

But as an assistant to our Champions League winning team in 2012, he’s clearly got a head-start, and his connection to their star player will only have helped.

Eddie is a much loved character at Chelsea, and we wish him the best on his new adventure.
