Top Chelsea transfer target has release clause of “at least” £42.6m

Chelsea have been linked with a few big names for this January, after a spell out of the market.

Not many of them are more coveted by the fans than Timo Werner. The RB Leipzig striker has been proving himself a top tier player in the last couple of seasons, and his time in Saxony appears to be coming to an end.

Frank Lampard’s team want to put themselves at the front of the queue to sign him, but according to the Athletic‘s Simon Johnson today there are two rather significant factors to consider.

Firstly, the forward has a release clause, which should make signing him easier in theory, although the site says it’s of “at least €50m” – hardly a useful claim if it turns out to be €200m or €500m.

Secondly they say that Leipzig won’t let him go until the summer. That’s not surprising, and in fact it’s exactly why our strategy should be to bring in a short term forward in January if needed, to back up Tammy as second choice for now, and potentially as third choice long-term behind Tammy and Timo should the Germany striker arrive in the summer.
