Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham has been asked about the possibility of playing for England at this summer’s European Championships, and in classic Tammy style he’s been very modest.
With Harry Kane injured and likely to be out until just before this summer’s big international tournament, Chelsea’s number 9 is in a great spot to earn the starting spot under Gareth Southgate.
If he carries on scoring like he is now, he’s in with a real shout. But asked about his competition for the starting spot, Abraham immediately just spoke about his admiration for his fellow Three Lions strikers:
“I look up to Harry Kane. I’m gutted he’s injured. Hopefully he will be back for the Euros,” he declared.
When asked about Jamie Vardy, who is top scorer in the Premier League and – as it stands – retired from England duty, Abraham took a similar firm line:
“Jamie is a talented striker. He is one of the players I have grown up admiring.”
He’s clearly not intending to let any journalist form a rift between him and his potential colleagues.
But we all know Tammy is ambitious, and will snap up the chance to start, if it comes. He will have to keep scoring, but as it stands, he’s never been in a better spot to snatch that slot.
