“His representatives are working hard” – £51m Atletico flop in contact with Chelsea

Thomas Lemar was a very in demand player a couple of summers ago, when he joined Atletico Madrid from Monaco.

But since then he’s struggled to make an impact, and the Spanish club are freely admitting they’re willing to sell him now.

According to the Sun today, they think they can get £51m for the winger, which seems amazingly ambitious. Manager Diego Simeone has openly admitted that the player is being shopped around:

“He has not been able to show all his qualities… His representatives are working hard. The clubs operate on what they need.”

The “clubs” he refers to are apparently Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. We can probably rule out Spurs seeing as they’re close to signing PSV winger Steven Bergwijn, but Arsenal always looked a likely destination for a flighty French winger.

As for Chelsea, it’s hard to picture us paying anywhere near that fee for a player who has essentially failed for two straight seasons. A loan with an option? Maybe. A big fee up front in a positions we’re relatively well covered in? We don’t think so.
