Mason Mount can reveal nothing new about another dire Chelsea performance in the final third

We’ve heard from a few players following yesterday’s defeat to Newcastle, with Mason Mount the latest to have his comments recorded on the official Chelsea website.

What can you really say after a match like that, other than the usual platitudes? The players are hardly going to reveal any real tactical insight even if they had any, and so they end up with the same tired cliches every time.

“We had a lot of possession, we created a lot of chances, but when we score no goals we can’t say anything,” Mount said.

“They did unbelievable to defend the whole game, making blocks, winning tackles, and in football anything can happen. They then go to the other end of the pitch late on and score,” the midfielder concluded.

His own performance was very poor, and rather worrying. This wasn’t the game for him, really, but as he has all too often recently he massively struggled to create anything in the final third when we were desperately searching for a spark.

He seems much better in games where there is space and time for him in the final third. His position as a starter has to be under question when he plays like he did yesterday.
