Frank Lampard explains how impressive young defender has changed

Frank Lampard has had a tough time choosing his favoured central defensive partnership.

The Chelsea boss has cycled through just about every combination available to him in his 6 months in charge, and that didn’t let up against Hull at the weekend, where the recently out of favour Fikayo Tomori partnered Kurt Zouma at the back.

Tomori may not have been getting many games recently, but his strong performance may have changed that.

Chelsea’s official website had quotes from Lampard explaining exactly what he liked in Tomori’s game, and what’s changed in the year and a half he’s been coaching him:

“Working with Fikayo up at Derby, we saw the things we needed to improve, even things like personality-wise, as he was quite quiet,” the manager said.

“Now you see a different change in his personality and his development. He’s played for his country and he’s playing regularly for us and doing very well. I’m delighted with his progress.”

We all are. Tomori looked like he was going to be a reserve all season, even once David Luiz had left, and despite losing his place recently he’s already played far more than one might have expected.

The more minutes he plays the more he will improve, and the happier Frank Lampard will be.
