Chelsea offered £50m La Liga flop – but they surely won’t bite

January is upon us, and clubs looking to flog players are cracking up their hype machines.

Thomas Lemar was a big money arrival at Atletico Madrid a couple of summers ago, but the Spanish club are now looking to move him on as quickly as possible. He’s not succeeded, and his value is rapidly draining away.

The Evening Standard claim he’s been offered to Chelsea – which we don’t doubt. We’re sure every club in Europe with a budget has been shown the brochure at least. But what we do doubt is whether Frank Lampard will be interested.

Lemar is a lot better than what he’s showed at Atletico, but he’s still not done anything to be worth that kind of money. A loan with an option to buy, to provide some depth? Feasible. But beyond that, it’s hard to see us seeing this as a good idea.

We wish Diego Simeone’s team the best of luck finding a home for their expensive asset – we’re just not sure West London is the place for him.
