Chelsea may have a clearer path to Timo Werner after important quotes in Germany

Chelsea have an easier path to signing a top new striker today, if rumours in the Sun are to be believed.

The tabloid writes that German giants Bayern Munich have pulled out of their chase for Timo Werner, the RB Leipzig striker currently in demand from some of Europe’s top teams.

Chelsea are supposed to be one of them, which would mean that a major obstacle in our path has now been removed. Bayern make a habit of hoovering up all the best German talent, and it’s difficult to buy anyone in the Bundesliga who isn’t already on some level betrothed to the Bavarians.

They quote sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic speaking about Werner, saying he’s a good player but pointing out that robert Lewandowski is still Europe’s top number 9.

That’s true, but it wouldn’t stop them planning for the future. Are we sure this isn’t just all smoke and mirrors from Bayern?
