Chelsea linked with Dries Mertens as January alternatives begin to dry up

Chelsea have been linked with a bid for Napoli forward Dries Mertens today as the transfer window gets closer to its close.

The rumours come from the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports Italia, who claims that the Blues have turned to the 32 year old as a potential attacking reinforcement as their other options begin to evaporate.
He doesn’t put too much weight on it, and just claims it’s interest rather than anything more developed than that, but it’s certainly enough to get fans excited.

As Kristof Terreur points out, we have been linked with the tricky Belgian before, when Antonio Conte was in charge.

Napoli are having a somewhat disastrous season, and may be willing to sell the man who has until recently been a hero in Naples. They are planning a big squad clearout for the summer, and if we offer them the chance to get started on it ahead of time, they may we’ll be tempted to take us up on it.
