Chelsea fail to back Lampard as no new signings all but confirmed

We have spent the transfer window reading various reports of Chelsea looking to sign players, and it looks pretty certain that there won’t be any new arrivals after Frank Lampard’s lunchtime press conference.

The Blues manager was visibly frustrated when receiving questions about the transfer window, and was to the point in his response confirming that he did need players, but it won’t be happening.

As reported by Football London, Lampard said:

“I wanted to bring players in, but i know how football has been.”

It was only earlier this month when he was also explaining that he needs new players now, as reported by The BBC at the time, he said:

“If we are looking for people to bring in to the areas to win games when you are controlling it, it is scoring goals.

“It’s clear from what I’m saying we know where we need to strengthen.

“We know we have problems at the top of the pitch in terms of we don’t get enough goals. If you don’t score you are always liable for a sucker punch and they got it.

“We can’t work any more in training on finishing. You need to have that killer instinct in front of goal. We need to score more goals from front-line areas if we are going to get to where we want to be.”

Unless we have a last minute surprise, The Chelsea board have failed to bring in a single player, despite Lampard asking for more than one. This is not good enough.

Of course the January transfer window is notoriously difficult to buy in, but they have had a long time to plan and work on potential deals. And the fact they could not even give Lampard a new striker and allow Olivier Giroud to leave, is entirely unacceptable.

Lampard, a club legend, has been let down already in my view.
