Cavani to Chelsea latest – Clubs in standoff, bid made, Blues not put off by Atletico interest

Chelsea’s transfer window has finally started to heat up a little in terms of actual movements.

The Edinson Cavani to Chelsea story has started to gather some pace, but it doesn’t look like one where we will get a fast conclusion. Standard Chelsea!

So what is the latest?

Well, The Telegraph have literally just published a story confirming that Chelsea have made an enquiry to PSG asking about taking Cavani on loan this season for a £5 million fee.

However, they reveal that the clubs are now in a standoff, with PSG asking that Chelsea sign the 32-year old on a permanent deal for £12.6 million instead.

Chelsea want to keep the fee as low as possible, due to Cavani’s high wages. But the report states that Cavani has become Frank Lampard’s number one priority this window.

Atletico Madrid are also keen on signing Cavani, and the players parents have spoken about their desire for their son to sign for the Spanish side, as reported by Sky Sports earlier. However, this has not put Chelsea off their pursuit, so says The Telegraph’s report.

Meanwhile, The Times reported earlier today that they also believe Chelsea have made a £5 million loan offer for Cavani.

So why a loan move when his contract is up in the summer?

Well, for Chelsea it makes absolute sense. Short term fix, brings the entire fee down to around £7 million in total, much less than a permanent move, and it also allows them to chase a longer term target in the summer.

For PSG, it’s not as favourable, unless it becomes their only option. If Atletico refuse to stump up the fee to buy him as well as pay his massive wages, then Chelsea’s offer might start to look quite good for them – allowing him to leave, not having to pay his wages anymore, and still getting a fee for him.

One to keep an eye on for sure!
