Chelsea have just lost 2-0 to Southampton at home, and it wasn’t pretty.
Frank Lampard’s team read from the same script they had several times recently, failing to create chances and then getting caught on the counter several times, with some success.
Fans on social media weren’t happy, and they laid into Lampard’s decisions, and a number of individual players too. This string of home defeats is a serious problem now, and Stamford Bridge was emptying out quickly.
The win over Spurs will buy the manager a lot of patience, but that doesn’t mean we can play like this and get away with it. He will know that too.
The pundits on Twitter responded with some pretty critical points at times during the game. Several individual players were mentioned, but ultimately the opinion was that it just wasn’t good enough.
You can see some of their reaction here:
1 – Chelsea have lost a Premier League game on Boxing Day for the first time since 2003 (W9, D5). Stunned.

Christian Pulisic needed to start against Southampton, there was no reason to bench him. He didn't play against Tottenham and then he's had a further couple of days rest before this game, why didn't he start?
Such an embarrassing performance, poor from Frank also.

Reece James doesn’t fix all our issues at the back either.

total lack of solutions. it’s as if we just panic and hit and hope. tons of aimless balls over the top, endless sideways passing. the result was sealed after we went down a goal.

A few boos from home fans greet that full time whistle. But, to be fair, quite a few people had already gone home by that stage. The feel-good factor from Spurs on Sunday seems pretty distant now.

How many times are we going to see exactly the same match at home?

Much of Chelsea’s good work against Tottenham undone in a few hours this afternoon. The gap is three points again #cfc #thfc

My heart hurts, man.

Lampard went from getting it spot on against Tottenham to getting it completely wrong against Southampton.
It could be squad depth, it could be Frank.
