Rebuilding Chelsea reduced to just 3 players in the top 100

This is a time of transition for Chelsea, everyone agrees on that. This is not a normal team battling for the top prizes, this is a side shorn of its top player in the summer looking to refind some identify and build for the future again.

So perhaps it’s no surprise we’re down to just 3 players in the Guardian’s list of the top 100 in the world. In years gone by, when we were racing to the latter stages of the Champions League every year, you might expect to see us with 6 or 7, as Liverpool have now. But we’ve got to be content with 3, for now.

N’Golo Kante is up in the 20s, and clearly our only “world class” player as it stands. Behind him comes Jorginho, a well established and competent international class player who can hold his own in any Champions League team.

Further back, in the 80s, Tammy Abraham’s amazing rise from Championship striker is marked by his appearance here. If he continues scoring as he is now, he will easily crack the top 50 next year.
