FrankLampard explains why Mason Mount was left on the bench

Mason Mount was outstanding against Liverpool at the weekend, and it was something of a surprise to see him left on the bench today.

We all knew Frank Lampard was looking to rotate with so many games this month, but it seemed an odd time to do it.

As it turned out the team really missed him in the first half, and looked somewhat more effective when he was subbed on early in the second. It left a lot of people scratching their heads about why he didn’t start.

Lampard was able to shed more light on the matter after the game, explaining that the midfielder had “felt rough” before the game, another top footballer falling foul of the bugs that clearly sweep round their training grounds.

“Mason has been feeling rough the last few days. It brightened it a bit but not enough,” he said in quotes picked up by the Sun. But he wasn’t letting anyone say that his team had improved much in the second half:

“We controlled the game but we are not getting anything in the box. It’s a testing period but we have to deal with that.”

Mount did improve things, but not enough. This is fast becoming a little bit of a crisis.
