“Every year I thought I would have the opportunity to play at Chelsea” – Nigeria defender talks about loan army experience

Chelsea had Kenneth Omeruo on their books for an impressive 7 years, without the Nigeria defender ever playing a competitive game for the Blues.

Last season he went on loan to Leganes, and really impressed in La Liga, leading to the club from the Madrid suburbs paying €5m for his permanent transfer in the summer.

He’s continued doing well for Lega, and just did this interview with Spanish paper AS which talks about his move, and also the general experience of being on loan constantly.

“Every year I thought I would have the opportunity to play at Chelsea, but in the end it didn’t come. So last season I told them: ‘Let me go play in La Liga and test if I have the quality’,” he was quoted as saying by AS.

It’s interesting to hear that he thought he was going to get his shot at Stamford Bridge. For all his successful loans, from our end it never looked like he was good enough to get his chance, and even with the transfer ban in place this year, he was allowed to leave.

He’s clearly got a lot of ability however, and nobody will be surprised to see him end up somewhere bigger than Leganes.

It just might not be somewhere as big as Chelsea.
