Mourinho says the Chelsea academy did not produce top level players

Jose Mourinho has been Tottenham manager for just one day, and people are already feeling slighted by his comments.

Speaking on Spurs TV in quotes picked up by the Daily Mirror, Mourinho spoke about using the club’s academy, with the elephant in the room being his failure to bring through young players in his previous roles, including at Chelsea.

“The problem is that sometimes you get into clubs where the work that is below you is not good enough to produce these players,” Mourinho said in quotes picked up by the Mirror.

Many are basically taking that to mean that he wanted to play the youth in his time at Chelsea, but they weren’t up to scratch. You might agree with him in his first spell, but in his second Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Dom Solanke were looking for a chance they were never given.

On the other hand, what else can he say. Whatever comes out of his mouth from now on will be taken as a dig against his previous clubs, and there’s not much he can do about it.
