Michy Bathshuayi not taking his chances in battle for minutes

Michy Batshuayi has never had a run of starts as a Chelsea player. That is true and fair to say. But what he has had is plenty of appearances as a sub, often for extended periods.

While he’s a useful poacher when we’re desperately chasing a last minute winner, lurking in the box to poke home, he’s useless when he gets 20+ minutes on the pitch and we try to play through him. This week was an example. He came on in the 72nd minute, and really made no impact at all.

By the end, fans were wishing that Tammy Abraham had stayed on, or perhaps that Olivier Giroud was our second option instead.

Michy doesn’t look like he will ever have the footballing brain on the technique to play up top against the very best teams. He can be an excellent super sub, but not play for us for extended periods, unless we significantly change the way we play.
