Mad night at Stamford Bridge answers one full back question, but asks another

In a crazy 4-4 at Stamford Bridge last night, just about everything that could happen did happen. In a game like that one might not expect two defenders to be the talk of the terraces afterwards, but so it’s proved for Chelsea fans.

Marcos Alonso started the game at left back, but had such a dire 45 minutes that he was taken off at half time by Frank Lampard, who switched right back Cesar Azpilicueta to the left and replaced Alonso with Reece James.

Alonso was so poor that we can safely say that Emerson Palmieri, rested last night after starting at the weekend, has regained his place as the first choice left back. Question answered.

But the superb form shown by James on the night has created other issues. With Emerson in on the left, how do you fit the youngster in? Dropping Azpilicueta would be a huge move, as would playing Azpi ahead of Emerson on the left.

There will be chances for everyone, of course, but this question is only going to grow as Reece continues to perform.
