The factors that ended Chelsea’s long Aguero chase

Chelsea fans will already be aware that the club were pursuing then-Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero back in the day, but what they may not know is just how close we came to signing him, and what it was that eventually put us off.

The Athletic today have a really in depth piece on the striker’s on-again, off-again move which never happened, and it details just how tantalisingly close we got to securing his signature.

There were various obstacles in the way of the deal, and between them they ended up bringing the whole thing down.

At first, it was the £40m that the Spanish side wanted, then a Premier League record. After that it was the £5m agent fees that they were going to have to stump up.

After Chelsea played Atleti in the Champions League, John Terry gave a mediocre report of the striker’s efforts which may have put them off.

The final hurdle was the arrival on the scene of Neymar, who distracted our efforts. Soon City had the deal wrapped up, and the rest was history.
