Defender says he ended up at Barcelona after Chelsea move blocked by ban

We will never know exactly what deals Chelsea had in the pipeline to make this summer. There were presumably some seriously big names in the mix which never ended up coming, and are now at other clubs.

One who we know the club were very keen to bring in was Xavier Mbuyamba. The youngster’s agent gave an interview early in the summer indicating Chelsea were close to a deal, but after the ban things clearly didn’t work out, and now the player himself has been quoted speaking to Fox Sports about the move that fell through:

“[Chelsea] wanted to offer me a three-year contract. But the transfer ban prevented me from going there. There were also many other clubs that wanted me, including FC Barcelona,” the defender told Voetbal Primeur.

Anyway. While it’s always nice to sign up some spicy 17 year olds for the youth team, the transfer ban has allowed us to enter the most enjoyable season of being a Chelsea fan for some time, with Frank Lampard leading a team of youngsters to great success.

So we’re not too bothered that this one slipped away.
