Chelsea join race for £70m talent – but signing him may not be necessary

Chelsea are ready to take on Barcelona for one of Brazil’s brightest talents, according to the Daily Express.

They claim that Reinier Jesus, an attacking midfielder currently impressing for Flamengo in Brazil, is now a top priority target from Frank Lampard and the scouting team upstairs at Stamford Bridge.

The brilliant 17 year old has 4 goals in 12 appearances, which we supposed justifies the colossal £70m price tag being put on him by his club.

We really can’t see us spending anything like that much on a 17 year old. The world of football transfer went mad a long time ago, but this would still seem a gamble too far.

We’re having so much success with young players we’ve developed ourselves, is there any real need to blow the whole thing up by splashing so much money on a mystery import.

Clearly he’s a massive talent, and one day soon we may well be ruing the fact we didn’t stump up the cash. But right now, it seems like a crazy risk to take when everything is on the right path already.
