Azpilicueta’s amazing 15 defensive interventions can’t save Chelsea clean sheet

Chelsea lost 2-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad yesterday, but it wasn’t a disastrous performance by any means. There were some solid performances, with Cesar Azpilicueta standing out in particular.

The Spaniard was deployed on the right to shut down Raheem Sterling, which he did, and then moved to left back when Reece James came on, locking down Riyad Mahrez.

He ended up with an amazing 15 defensive contributions, according to how WhoScored measure it. 4 tackles, 4 interceptions, 6 clearances and a block. Now that’s what you call a busy day.

Sadly despite his individual heroics, the team conceded twice, once to a Mahrez run on the far side, and once to a deflected shot past Kepa. Azpi can rest easy knowing he did all he could to keep his team’s short-lived lead.

His future may lie back at left back now, with James looking a cert on the right, but wherever we put him. We know he will perform.
