There’s a kind of conspiracy going round – a rather silly one, that Frank Lampard is not picking Christian Pulisic because the winger is American, and that if he was English he’d be more likely to get in the team.
Now that’s a rather offensively silly rumour, and it was immediately shut down by Ian Darke on ESPN when it was raised.
As he says, the only way that the winger will get into this team is through hard work and good performance when he gets the chance. The idea that his nationality is coming into it is a bit of a joke, and quite insulting to manager Lampard, who is making a point of picking people on merit.
