Frank Lampard has been speaking to the media after Chelsea’s win over Newcastle United, and he picked out two players for praise who didn’t actually start the game.
The questions from the media were focused on Callum Hudson-Odoi, who indeed sparkled, especially in a lively first half.
But Frank turned the question round, as he so often does, and used it to shine a light on some unexpected names who usually get less praise. His quotes, as recorded by Nizaar Kinzella of Goal.com, are recorded here:
Lampard on subs impact: "Kovacic was outstanding. Going by people, Pulisic gets at people in the position just behind Tammy." #CFC #CHENEW

Lampard on Pulisic:"I am really pleased for him. He is a hot topic because of his national team. Everyone has got carried away with the short term but in the long term there is a lot more to come. I am delighted for him. He will feel good about that and he should do" #CFC #CHENEW

It’s no surprise to see him reserve extra praise for Pulisic, who did indeed make a good impact after coming on, after the criticism he’s taken recently. Kovacic too often usefully knits things together in the middle without much praise, and he did so well today after replacing Ross Barkley at the end of the first half.
Both must now be in line to earn a start against Ajax on Wednesday, when Frank will surely make some changes. They’ve put themselves front and centre.
