The new Premier League chief executive is a Chelsea fan

The Premier Leagu ehave appointed David Pemsel as their new chief executive, after a search which has taken over a year.

The former Guardian Media Group head has been named the successor to Richard Scudamore after a long and presumably painful search for the English top flight. It remains to be seen what impact Pemsel will make, but there’s one thing that’s going to be noted from the very start – he is a Chelsea fan.

That’s what everyone, including for example this piece in the Telegraph, has noted this week, as well as the fact that the man leading the search was Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck.

Nobody is seriously going to suggest anything bad based on this, but you can be sure there will be some eye-rolling, and some joke-making, somewhere down the line.

And, of course, Liverpool fans will eventually end up convinced there is a genuine anti-Red conspiracy at the very top now.
