Goals for Chelsea’s reserve strikers show race for game time is still on

Tammy Abraham is the clear fist choice striker for Frank Lampard right now. In fact, if you read the signs right, it’s been clear since the summer’s friendlies that that was the way Lampard was leaning.

Since then, Tammy has gone from strength to strength, scoring goals impressing everyone with his performances. Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi have been reduced to just competing for a backup spot.

They both matched each other over this break, both scoring for their respective counties. It’s hardly going to be enough to get them in a team ahead of Tammy, who is scoring a goal a game, but it keeps them pretty much neck and neck in trying to be his first reserve.

Michy has 10 goals in 28 games for his country, which is not bad going at all, while Giroud is still steadily climbing the list of his country’s top scorers.  For now, all they can do is keep it up and hope that red-hot Abraham slows down.

Right now, that’s not looking too likely.
