The Chelsea player who did not travel to Southampton for today’s match

Frank Lampard is starting to get many selection headaches as the injured players have started to return, and it’s a problem that is only going to get worse for him, but it is a problem that he will absolutely love to have.

This time, it appears that Olivier Giroud is the one to miss out on even a place on the Chelsea bench for this afternoons Sky Sports match against Southampton, if the reports are true.

They come from French publication L’Equipe, who claim that the 32-year old striker did not travel to Southampton with the rest of the squad yesterday.

There is no mention of any new injuries for Giroud, even though he has recently been out with illness. He had recovered from this though, so it only reiterates the fact that he is third choice striker for Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

This will be a tough one for Giroud to take. If you like to bet on Premier League football, you might want to gamble on there not being too many goals in this one. Without Giroud in the squad, the Blues might struggle to keep finding the net – unless Tammy Abraham can keep up his good form.
