Chelsea former midfield marksman loves Mason Mount’s “aggression and understanding”

One of Chelsea’s spiciest goalscoring midfielders from the 1990s has spoken this week in very complimentary terms about a new player in that mould breaking through.

Gus Poyet is a controversial figure at Stamford Bridge, and one who is still debated today. But his passion and eye for goal were defining characteristics for him, and he sees similar things in Mason Mount.

“He has the mentality that Frank wants, he goes and produces. People sometimes only look at goals but not at the first line of the press or the aggression or the understanding,” Poyet raved about Frank Lampard’s favoured midfield weapon.

“I like the way he finds positions around the box as well.”

So it’s not just getting on the scoresheet that Poyet likes. He’s right to point to the other parts of Mason’s game which are exceptional, but get little praise.

Let’s hope the rest of his career at Chelsea leave him with a better reputation that the Uruguayan left with.

Given the messianic status that Mason has at Stanford Bridge right now, it’s hard to see that not being the case.
