Chelsea are at the front of the queue for Ben Chilwell, according to the Daily Mail’s report that came out this evening.
The Blues might even move to try and secure a deal for the Leicester left back as soon as January according to the same report.
It’s an odd move, given we’ve got two valuable and well paid players already in the left back slot. Both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri have been good when playing this season, but there’s still a sense we can upgrade there, and Chilwell’s excellent form is hard to ignore.
The stumbling block might be his price tag. If Harry Maguire, also English and a similar age, also playing for Leicester moving to a top team, cost £80m+. Chilwell isn’t going to be much less.
In fact the constant inflation of the market could mean the Foxes ask even more for their left back. The question is, how far are Chelsea willing to go? We’ll have plenty in the bank after a window or two of no signings, and both Alonso and Emerson could be sold…
It’s an idea!
