Another Chelsea midfielder picks up injury on international duty

Chelsea get hit hard by injuries on every international break, and this one looks like it will be no different.

Mateo Kovacic joined the walking wounded this week, leaving the match with Wales at half time after picking up a problem towards the end of the first period. It doesn’t look anything very serious, but even if it’s a tweak or a twinge in the hamstring it’s likely to rule him out for next weekend’s match, as a precuation at least.

We’ve already seen N’Golo Kante leave France’s training camp with an injury issues, this could mean a seriously weakened midfield against Newcastle at the weekend.

Ross Barkley is almost certain to play now, with Mason Mount called back to play in the midfield 3. Frank Lampard’s squad is really going to be stretched to the limit now.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek must be close to a return to training, but next weekend will certainly still be too soon for him.
