Young Scotsmen looking up to Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour, compatriot claims

Scotland U21 international Allan Campbell has revealed his belief that younger Scotsmen will be looking up to Chelsea prodigy Billy Gilmour.

Gilmour, who is just 18-years-old age, was brought on as a second half substitute by Frank Lampard during our 2-2 Premier League stalemate with Sheffield United.

Regardless of whether you think it was naive to throw such an inexperienced player into the action at a key point in the contest, there’s no denying that it bodes well for Gilmour’s age counterparts.

That appears to have been recognised all the way up in Scotland, too, with Motherwell’s Allan Campbell claiming that Gilmour making his Chelsea debut will have inspired some of the other younger Scotsmen.

Campbell is quoted by Football Scotland saying:

“It’s great to get the chance to play with him and I was obviously buzzing for him when he came on for Chelsea last weekend. Hopefully he can keep shining and kicking on. He’s like any other boy. He’s humble off the park but when he goes out there, he always shows his talent. In training he works hard but you can see the ability he has a mile off. He’s always doing tricks and some of the stuff he does is brilliant. I’m glad he’s getting the opportunity with his club to play at such a high level. I know a lot of the boys here look at him and think if he’s getting a chance at first-team level then we can do the same if we keep our heads down and work hard.”

If Gilmour is able to fulfil his potential then both us and Scotland are in for a treat. He really could be one of the best midfielders around one day.
