Phillip Cocu believes Chelsea’s forgotten man can still get into their first team

Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel is a player who has literally been plagued with injuries in his career, more than most.

He arrived at Chelsea from Vitesse in 2013 but has only ever made 2 competitive appearances for them. As well as suffering with injuries, he has spent time developing on loan at Milan, Stoke City, and PSV.

His most successful spell was in Holland with PSV, where he made 56 appearances and scored 29 goals across two seasons.

The 26-year old now finds himself back at Chelsea once again and attempting to complete his recovery in order to be in contention to play for them this season.

One man who rates the Dutch international is Derby County manager Phillip Cocu. He actually made van Ginkel captain of his PSV side whilst managing them back in 2017, and he firmly believes that he has enough to play for Chelsea once he finally returns to full fitness.

Speaking to The Athletic, Cocu said:

“I have remained in contact with Marco. I spoke to him over the summer to see how he was progressing.

“A fully-fit Marco van Ginkel can certainly play a part for Chelsea in my opinion.

“It is important that Marco is given time because he has been out injured for a while and it can take a player a while to get up to speed, and to the level they were at before.

“If he can get fully fit I am sure he can be another option for Chelsea.”
