“I’m still hungry” – Olivier Giroud not ready for the bench just yet

Olivier Giroud has been playing second fiddle to Tammy Abraham since the start of the season, but he’s not resigned to that position just yet.

Since the early days of preseason it’s been clear that Frank Lampard has a preference for Tammy Abraham. The young forward can press the opposition with more speed and stamina than Giroud, which fits Frank’s high pressing style.

He’s also found the net in the last two games, which makes him hard to get rid of.

But in quotes carried by the Daily Mail, Giroud has made it clear he’s not happy to just resign himself to second place.

“Obviously not,” he responded when asked about whether he was happy as Abraham’s backup.

“I have goals in my head. I’m here to help the new generation, but the retirement time has not come. I’m still hungry.”

We’re very glad to hear it. Just as much as we agree with Frank’s decision to play Tammy, we’re also well aware of the importance of Giroud to this team. He was vital in the Europa League last year, and with so many fixtures to come again this season, he knows he will get his chance.

Whether through injury or bad form, we will need Olivier, and his hunger and goals might just win us something this year.
