“It gives you the extra fire” – Chelsea player explains his motivation for next big challenge

Mason Mount is Chelsea’s breakthrough star of the season – well, along with Tammy Abraham – and on the eve of what is likely to be his Champions League debut, Goal.com took the chance to talk to the academy product about his memories of the club winning it in 2012.

The midfielder was just a 13 year old, watching at home in his Chelsea kit, with no idea that one day he would be wearing that same Blue as a starter in the same competition.

His quotes as touching, showing how he lived it just like a fan, just as we all did:

“It is a historic night in the club’s history, I was at home with my family watching it,” Mount recalled.

“I remember every part of the game, Drogba scoring the header and then the winning pen, brilliant night.

“Watching that as a kid, it gives you the extra fire and the goal to want to play in the Champions League because you have seen what the club has done before.”

Valencia should provide a perfect debut test for the 21 year old tonight, with plenty of quality but vulnerabilities that we can target too. Mason will get the chance to attack from wide areas once again, if everything goes to plan.

His now manager was a key player in that glorious Champions League win – what can he teach his protege through this maiden campaign in the competition?
