Former Liverpool player doubt Chelsea can score enough goals for European glory

Former Liverpool player Phil Thompson has been ruling the roost taking a look at the English teams’ chances in the Champions League for SportingLife, and he has some interesting takes on Chelsea.

The former Red thinks that while we have “good players”, he’s uncertain if they’re going to be “good enough offensively to score goals.”

That’s an interesting take, given we’ve scored a lot of goals and really had trouble keeping them out. Was this written before the season started?!

In Europe we’re inclined to agree with him that there are “vulnerabilities” that will stop us going all the way, but from  our perspective they are mostly defensive deficiencies. We should have enough goals in us to compete, even on the continent.

Either way, we face our first real test tonight against Valencia. They’ve got some really dangerous attacking players, and our young team is going to have to step up to this next level from banging in a few against Wolves and Norwich..
