Chelsea must fear Valencia’s attacking duo

Frank Lampard gave his prematch press conference yesterday and was asked about the Valencia team he is up against tonight.

He gave the usual complimentary manager speak – dangerous team, good on the counter, etc. etc. but there was one specific thing he mentioned. The two strikers that the Spanish side have. He’s not wrong. They have a really talented pair of forwards, and given how our back line has played this season, they will be a real threat.

His full quotes, via the Guardian, are here.

Rodrigo Moreno is Spain international and was a target for Atletico Madrid this summer. He’s clever, with expert technique and a poacher’s finishing.

With Rodrigo slipping between the lines, Maxi Gomez will lead the attack. Bought from Celta this summer, the target man provides a big physical threat, and an Aguero-like eye for goal.

It was not just lip service Frank was paying yesterday. These are good players who can cause us serious problems. Any goal conceded in this pivotal opening home fixture against the second strongest team in the group will be a big swing. These two will test us as much as any team we’ve faced this season.
