Tackles, touches and assists – this £40m arrival looks class in Lampard’s system

Chelsea beat Norwich 3-2 at Carrow Road yesterday, and there were plenty of plaudits for Frank Lampard and his team as they earned their first win under the coach.

The focus was naturally on the goalscorers, the home grown pair of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount. But others shone too, including Mateo Kovacic in midfield. He made his loan permanent this summer for a sum of £40m according to the BBC, and it seems

With N’Golo Kante out, the Croat was forced to play a slightly different role than usual, and the stats from his performance as you can see on WhoScored sum up what an all round showing he put on.

As well as picking up an assist, the former Real Madrid man had 81 touches, the most of any non-defender on the team. Most impressively, with Kante absent, he made 4 tackles, the second most on the team.

Kovacic seems to really have settled well after a year in England, and Frank Lampard’s system seems to be suiting him nicely. Let’s hope that with Kante back to provide more of a platform behind him, he can continue to flourish with more games like this.
