Lampard gives injury update on key midfielder

Frank Lampard has been giving his first press conference as Chelsea manager today, and there was plenty of news to report on.

Of course the first slew of questions were all about David Luiz, but once we’d got through the Chelsea defender’s move to Arsenal, we could move on to the team news for this Sunday.

One of the most important decisions that he will have to make is over N’Golo Kante. The midfielder has been a huge miss for his club since the end of last season, and while he’s back training now, Lampard isn’t sure whether he is “match fit” – he says he will have to decide before the game.

You can see his quote recorded by Goal.com journalist Nizaar Kinsella here:

It’s promising that he’s that close, and it sounds like it truly is touch and go when it comes to whether he plays the Frenchman.

Given he aggravated the injury by returning too early last season, we reckon the club will play it safe and start him on the bench. If we can make it to 60 minutes still in the game, then bring the former Leicester man in, we can consider ourselves in a very good position.
