Ian Wright ‘very surprised’ by Frank Lampard’s decision to withdraw this Chelsea player

Ian Wright has criticised one of Frank Lampard’s substitutions during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, report the Express.

Lampard will have been desperate to mark his first game in charge of Chelsea in front of the Stamford Bridge crowd with a victory, but it just wasn’t to be against a physical Leicester side.

They ran rampant in the second period, with several Chelsea players feeling the effects from playing 120 minutes on Wednesday night and attempting to ready themselves for this contest.

While the blame for our failure to win certainly can’t be pinned on Lampard in this instance, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright wasn’t particularly impressed with one of his substitutions.

Wright is quoted by the Express saying:

“I was very surprised to see Olivier Giroud getting taken off when he did. [It needed to be] 70 minutes or 75 minutes and then bring Tammy on to stretch them a bit more. The ball didn’t stay in the area where they could cause Leicester problems. Stick with him and he could link up with Willian, who didn’t play particularly well.”

While we may have a point here, Lampard is going to give Abraham a chance to impress at every possible opportunity. He’s the future of our frontline, Giroud isn’t. That’s the bigger picture.
