Graeme Souness criticises Chelsea defender for giving away three goals in a week

Graeme Souness has criticised Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta, claiming that the Spaniard has given away three goals in the space of a week, report The Sun.

Azpilicueta has come under fire in recent weeks and months after a stark deterioration in his performance level. He used to be Mr. Consistent, but is fast becoming a scapegoat among the Chelsea community.

The Spaniard may wear the armband at the time of writing, but his starting spot is far from guaranteed if he continues to falter, especially with the impressive Reece James on his way back from injury.

After all, it’s only a matter of time before Frank Lampard himself recognises Azpilicueta has a liability. Even Graeme Souness, who is not the most analytical, has picked up on his errors.

He’s quoted by The Sun saying:

“Azpilicueta has been a brilliant defender for Chelsea but he doesn’t know Ndidi is there for the goal, he’s just watching the ball. He looks over his right shoulder and he stops that. He gave two goals away last week and gave this goal away today as well.”

Azpilicueta has been a truly incredible servant to this club and we’d like to see nothing more than for him to get back to his best. It’s difficult to envisage it, though. It could be time for James.
