Former assistant throws support behind Chelsea youngster after difficult opening game

Former Chelsea assistant Gianfranco Zola has backed Tammy Abraham to fulfil his potential and grow into the role of being the Blues’ number 9, report the Express.

Zola will have been keeping a close eye on Abraham while serving under Maurizio Sarri last term, especially when you consider our strikers’ inability to perform on a regular basis.

The Italian appears confident that Abraham will reach the level we need him to be, too, despite the youngster facing criticism after his first Premier League start for us at the weekend.

Zola is quoted by the Express rushing to the defence of the young forward:

“Maybe in the beginning he might suffer because you know the difference from the Championship and the Premier League is huge. He will have to adapt but he has a lot of energy, he’s positive. I think in the end he will get to the level he needs to be.”

We can’t realistically expect Abraham to adapt immediately to life in the Premier League, having spent last season out on loan with newly-promoted Aston Villa.

On another day he could easily have left Old Trafford with a goal, with Tammy rattling David De Gea’s post during the first-half with the scoreline level at 0-0.

He’ll adapt and he’ll succeed – we have no doubt about it.
